Players that purchased the game prior to August 29 2015 are considered to have a Guild Wars 2 "Core" account without the free-to-play restrictions. See guildwars2.com for further information. There is a "Partner Program" through which new purchases at current prices can also benefit your favorite content creator.
Starting in Guild Wars 2 is very shiny, colorful and interesting, but if you are into progression you might be turned down. It is in many ways more moba-ish than mmorpg as progression towards gear is more for the looks than stats which i did not mind and unlocking stuff was fun anyhow.

I get that, but nevertheless, I still think they are throwing legitimate free players under the bus with the restrictions. The strangest thing is, that you can't trade gold for gems, so you can't even buy more bag or bank space as a free player.
